Suzie, Creation year 2010

Suzie, Creation year 2010

October is a great time to tell the story of Suzie. This story began in 1995 when my friend Julie Hansen underwent a double mastectomy to eradicate cancer.  The cancer took over most of her organs and lymph nodes.  After a brave bone marrow transplant her battle ended.  My heart and mind had a difficult time reconciling the emotional loss her beautiful family endured.  It was my first punitive lesson on the reality of cancer. Every year thereafter I ran the Susan G. Komen race in her name.  Later in 2010 the Capitol Theatre asked me to create an Elle cookie for the Broadway play of Legally Blond.  They asked for a pink cookie with bling.  I was honored and the Elle cookie was born.  A vanilla dough with tart cherries and milk chocolate, sprinkled with pink bling.  As soon as the theatre season was over, I knew immediately to rename the cookie Suzie in honor of Susan G. Komen and what her foundation represents. Now when we teach how to decorate this cookie, we say “add just enough pink sugar, like a twinkle her eye”, just like Julie.  So, I say:  before you have a kink in your think about the color pink, remember, the cause does assist in research, awareness, and bond friends and families. I have watched many customers fight the pink battle, some win, and some leave behind their memory.  So in conjunction with ABC4 Good Things Utah, we took our word to the streets in March of 2010, and later joined forces with Intermountain Healthcare to remind you to get a free breast exam and Save a Pair of Suzies #saveapairofsuzies
